THIS SUNDAY GOSPEL MATINEE: This Sunday, February 28, 2:00 p.m. at Hugh’s Room (2261 Dundas St. W., Toronto) Ken Whiteley’s Sunday Gospel matinee series will have it’s final show of this season.  This will be a rare chance to see Ken Whiteley & The Beulah Band as Rosalyn Dennett and Frank Evans will be there. Special guests will also include the fabulous vocalist Colina Phillips, Washington, D.C. songwriter Jesse Palidofsky and the incomparable George Koller on string bass. Contact Hugh's Room to make reservations and/or purchase tickets.

From the moment Colina Phillips takes the stage, you know you are going to be part of something special.  She has appeared on literally hundreds of recordings and has earned a Gold Record in Canada.  Her latest CD is SVP Blue Mood.  Recently she has also devoted time to film and video production including making videos for Jackie Richardson and the films Making Change and Leap Year Love Dance. She worked with Ken on the seminal gospel recording Thank You, Lord. She weaves a rich tapestry of vocal magic.

Jesse Palidofsky is a pillar of the Washington, D.C. songwriter scene.  He has recorded several CD’s for Azalea City Records including his most recent work, Dancing Towards The Light.  This was recorded in Toronto with Ken in the producer’s chair and George Koller on string bass.  His exploration of spiritual themes is deeply informed by a wide variety of life experiences.  He articulates them with humour, dignity and joy.  He is an accomplished musician playing guitar, harmonica, piano and organ.

Frank Evans and Rosalyn Dennett are the vocal and instrumental backbone of Ken Whiteley & The Beulah Band.  Frank is a world class banjo player in both old time, clawhammer and contemporary bluegrass picking.  He is also the lead singer of the highly acclaimed Slocan Ramblers with whom he tours throughout North America.  Rosalyn’s versatile fiddling has been featured in many groups including Winnipeg’s Oh My Darling, Toronto’s Old Pony and Hannah Shira Naiman.  They both have large repertoires of both familiar and obscure old gospel numbers.

George Koller is a unique musician whose endeavours straddle jazz, world, folk, pop, new age and the unclassifiable.  He also has become something of an impresario producing recordings, events and concert series including the World Jazz for Haiti.  He defines the qualities of “big ears”, deep soulful playing and unsurpassed improvisational dexterity. George was the featured bass player on “Gospel Music Makes Me Feel Alright!”, the recording that began this series and it is always a treat to welcome him back.

Ken Whiteley & The Beulah Band was the 2nd most played folk recording for 2015 on the Stingray music streaming service.  You can expect to see some of Ken’s folk side at this show as he digs into this repertoire.  Rest assured that there will be lots of energy and chances to join in the singing.

ON TOUR: Ken and the Beulah Band (Rosalyn Dennett, Frank Evans and Daniel Koulack) will be performing in Calgary (March 4) and Edmonton (March 5). Ken and Daniel will also be doing a couple of house concerts in River Heights & Forget, and Ken will host a songwriter workshop in High River.  Check the Shows tab for more info.

MARCH GOSPEL VESPERS: The Ken Whiteley Trio (with bassist Alastair Whitehead and drummer Bucky Berger) leads the Gospel Vespers service at St. Anne's Anglican Church on Sunday, March 13th. It's part of the church's 2016 Lenten Evensong Series. This is a free event for the community and it will have a freewill offering during the service. Bring a friend and come out!
