Helder was born and raised in Coutada-Portugal, Serra da Estrela in a place full of tradition, song and dance. Helder moved to Canada in 1977, making his home in Toronto where he plays, teaches and records at his home studio. Helder released his first CD "Agua Viva " in 1999. A second CD "Cantigas da Terra" was released in late 2004. His influences are diverse. Growing up, he was surrounded by folk, popular music and fado. Later exposed to early blues from artists such as Robert Johnson, Muddy waters, Otis Redding, as well as more contemporary acts like the Rolling Stones, Clapton, Van Morrison and others. Helder has assimilated these styles into a genre that is predominantly a combination of folkbluesrock with soul. Helder writes in Portuguese and English languages.
